Introduction
About NIELIT: The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), formerly known as the DOEACC Society, is an Autonomous Scientific Society operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. Established with the objective of fostering Human Resource Development and associated activities in the domain of Information, Electronics, and Communications Technology (IECT), NIELIT has played a pivotal role in enhancing digital literacy and technical education across the country.
NIELIT actively engages in formal and non-formal education within the IECT sector. It continuously develops industry-relevant, high-quality educational and training programs in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Security and Forensics, Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM), and various other emerging technology domains. Offering a broad range of courses, from diploma and degree programs to specialized skilling initiatives, NIELIT also functions as a National Examination and Accreditation Body, ensuring the credibility and quality of IT and electronics-related courses conducted by affiliated institutes and organizations in the non-formal education sector.
Extensive PAN-India Presence: With a strong national presence, NIELIT operates across 55 locations, including major cities such as Agartala, Aizawl, Ajmer, Aurangabad, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Bikaner, Buxar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Chuchuyimlang, Churachandpur, Daman, Delhi, East Delhi, South West Delhi, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Gangtok, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jammu, Jorhat, Kargil, Kohima, Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Kurukshetra, Leh, Lucknow, Lunglei, Majuli, Mandi, Muzaffarpur, Noida, Pasighat, Patna, Pali, Pilibhit, Ranchi, Ropar, Senapati, Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Srinagar, Tezpur, Tezu, Tirupati, and Tura. The organization's headquarters is located in New Delhi.
In addition to its extensive physical network, NIELIT is well-integrated throughout India with over 700 affiliated institutes offering long-term skill-based programs and approximately 9,000 facilitation centers delivering digital competency training. This expansive outreach enables NIELIT to effectively cater to individuals from all segments of society, ensuring access to technology-driven education and training in even the most remote regions.
NIELIT as a Deemed-to-be University: In a landmark achievement, NIELIT has been conferred the status of a Deemed-to-be University (de-novo) through Gazette Notification No. 9-3/2023-U.3(A) dated July 15, 2024, as published in Part I, Section 1 of the Gazette of India. The primary campus of the university is located in Ropar, Punjab, with 11 constituent units situated in Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Kohima, Patna, Srinagar, Kekri, and Itanagar.
With this recognition, NIELIT is set to transform into a Digital University, adopting advanced pedagogical approaches to deliver high-quality, technology-driven education. This initiative aims to provide accessible and comprehensive digital learning opportunities for students, professionals, and researchers nationwide. By fostering a digitally skilled workforce, NIELIT continues to play a pivotal role in shaping India's technological future.
Comprehensive Skilling from School Education to Research Level: NIELIT provides a diverse array of educational programs, ranging from foundational secondary school-level courses to advanced doctoral research initiatives. It is the only institution in India that offers such an extensive spectrum of education and skilling opportunities under one umbrella. Its formal courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), ensuring adherence to the highest academic standards. Simultaneously, its non-formal courses are aligned with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and endorsed by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), catering to various job roles and industry requirements.
NIELIT as a National Examination and Accreditation Body: NIELIT serves as a premier National Examination Body, having successfully conducted examinations for over 1 crore candidates and offline assessments for more than 50 lakh participants. Beyond its own recruitment exams, NIELIT has organized examinations for several government organizations, including MeitY, ICERT, STQC, NIC, SAMEER, NTRO, CCRH, STPI, BOAT, CPWD, and others.
Additionally, NIELIT facilitates third-party online examinations with on-site proctoring and a centralized monitoring system, ensuring transparency and efficiency. Furthermore, it accredits institutes and organizations to conduct IT and electronics-related courses in the non-formal sector, thereby significantly contributing to nationwide skill development efforts.
Capacity Building and Research & Development Initiatives: NIELIT's mandate extends beyond education and examinations, encompassing a variety of capacity-building and research & development (R&D) projects. The organization is actively implementing several high-impact initiatives, including :
- Establishment of IndiaAI Labs to empower youth across 27 NIELIT centers.
- Skill development programs for youth in 60 Aspirational Districts.
- Future Skill Prime initiative to equip professionals with emerging technological competencies.
- Development of Cyber Forensic Training cum Investigation Labs in 8 North-Eastern States.
- Digital skill training for over 1.5 lakh Northeast citizens aligns with current industry demands.
Additionally, NIELIT has demonstrated its expertise in executing R&D projects, consultancy services, and turnkey solutions in areas such as office automation, software development, and website creation. It served as the nodal implementing agency on behalf of MeitY for the Data Digitization of the population across 15 states and 2 Union Territories as part of the National Population Register (NPR) project for the Registrar General of India (RGI). Furthermore, NIELIT plays a crucial role in the Agriculture Census and Input Survey project, handling the tabulation of approximately 10 crore data records.
