Digitisation of National Population Register

Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India (RGI) had entrusted the work of demographic data digitization for the creation of National Population Register (NPR) for usual residents in 15 States and 2 UTs to Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications  and Information Technology which assigned the same to NIELIT as implementing agency.  Other DeitY organizations, viz. CSC-SPV, C‑DAC, STQC and STPI were also assigned roles and responsibilities, in November 2010, for execution of the Project. The project cost was Rs. 572 crore (approx.) and covered demographic data entry of about 62 crore population.

The data digitization for Chandigarh (UT) was taken up on pilot basis and completed in March 2012.  For other areas, tenders were floated through NIELIT Centre, Chandigarh for engaging Managed Service Providers (MSPs).  The data digitization work for 25 Urban Zones and 19 Rural Zones (Phase I) covering population of about 24 crore, awarded to successful bidders in December 2011, was completed in March 2013.  The work in remaining 48 Rural Zones for about 37 crore records, awarded to MSPs in June 2012.The data digitization work has been successfully completed with the last bunch of data handed over to RGI in October 2013.
