Keeping with emerging trends and new technologies, NIELIT Shillong organized a workshop on GIS and its applications on 4/10/2016. Various state and central Govt departments like Survey of India, Forest, Geological Survey of India, North East Police academy, Agriculture and Students from colleges of adjoining areas participated in the workshop.

Speakers and resource persons included were-

1. Dr. Bijay Singh Mipun, Professor, Department of Geography, NEHU, Shillong spoke about Concepts and Foundation of Remote Sensing, Polar and Geo Sync Satellites systems.
2. Dr. Santanu Sharma, Asst. Professor,  Department of Geology, Cotton College, Guwahati  spoke on concepts of Geographical Information System (GIS), geographic database structure, data inputting in GIS, spatial data analysis (raster and vector data).He also gave an insight into various GIS and related softwares available.
3. Dr. K K Sharma, Senior Scientist ,  North-Eastern Space Applications Centre, Umiam, Meghalaya spoke on topics like Fundamentals of Photogrammetric, Introduction to GPS vis-a-vis IRNSS and Gagan,  Usage of  GIS w.r.t  Jhum cultivation in NE , Pesticide and fertilizer  management , landscape,etc.
