Taking into account the immense popularity of employment oriented courses offered by NIELIT Calicut, the need for augmenting hostel facilities at the campus was addressed in a holistic manner and a new additional hostel facility for students was conceived in September 2014. With the proactive support of CPWD, the new hostel rechristened as ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Hostel’ has been built at a cost of about Rs. 5 Crore and shall cater to residential hostel facilities for additional 96 students, thus scaling up the existing hostel infrastructure for about 600 students, i.e., about 360 boys and 240 girls.
Inaugurating the newly constructed ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Hostel’, Director General NIELIT, Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma said that the Government of India has identified growth of electronics hardware manufacturing sector as a thrust area and with the advent of ‘Skill India’, ‘Make-In-India’ and ‘Digital India’ programmes, institutions like NIELIT Calicut that are engaged in specialized programmes in electronics, has assumed greater significance. Dr. Sharma also appreciated the efforts put in by CPWD for the construction of the hostel within strict timelines. He further said that the additional hostel facility in the campus shall result in immense benefit for the youth and student community, corporate clients, industry participants enrolled for niche courses being offered by NIELIT Calicut.
Showcasing the Centre’s strengths in the area of IoT (Internet Of Things), the inaugural plaque was unveiled through a state-of-the-art technology, wherein an android based mobile application was used to remotely control the unveiling mechanism connected to a Raspberry Pi based web server, and the entire setup had been indigenously developed by the experienced engineering team of NIELIT Calicut Centre.
Dr. Sivaji Chakravorti, Director, NIT Calicut, was the Guest of Honour in the event and in his address, Dr. Chakravaorti appreciated the efforts of NIELIT, in general, and the Calicut Centre, in particular, which has demonstrated proven expertise in the conduct of high end courses in electronics. Dr. Chakravorti also complimented NIELIT for the visibility and vibrancy that NIELIT has achieved in the recent times, specially through greater use of technology and process re-engineering initiatives.
Shri Ram Nathram, Superintending Engineer, CPWD also outlined the joint efforts and initiatives undertaken by CPWD and NIELIT Calicut in construction of the Hostel and expressed his gratitude to Director General, NIELIT for the regular follow up and monitoring because of which the construction of the hostel could be completed under strict deadlines.
Dr. M.P. Pillai, Executive Director, NIELIT Calicut in his address brought out that the newly built hostel also had an Office Room, Warden Room, Sick Room, Mess Hall, Recreation Hall, besides state-of-the-art residential facilities for students. The hostel also caters to the needs of differently-abled students. Accommodation facility at the hostel shall be provided under subsidized rates and would also cater to the increased demands as a result of Faculty Development Programmes, Corporate Training Programmes, Internships for faculty, corporate clients and industry participants, which are being organized by NIELIT Calicut from time to time.
